Book Reviews

I have been to many places
I have been privy to the lives of many
I have laughed, cried and learnt by reading words written by others

Confessions of a gambler

One of my favourite books from my  favourite author. Ryda takes us into the world of Abeeda a 49 year old Muslim woman living what seems to be a quiet Muslim life in Cape town. Beyond Abeeda's hijab is an intricate story of addiction, loss, love and sacrifice... If you read a book this year, make this the one

A hauntingly beautiful read from an author gone too soon. The realities of life on the street and learning some tough life lessons along the way.  Some of the themes that the author deals with include sexuality and belonging. The story reads like an autobiography of the main character Azurey an orphan in the streets of Cape Town. The book won a Commonwealth Writer's Award for Best First Book in 2001.
